Lisandra Moreno, a 30-year-old Cuban woman, has recently been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a highly aggressive illness that demands expensive chemotherapy treatment in the United States.
In an effort to aid her in covering medical and living expenses during her fight for recovery, her friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign.
The campaign announcement, which has already gathered over $6,300 of the $13,000 goal, states, “Lisandra started her chemotherapy today and needs our support.”
One of Lisandra's childhood friends, who organized the GoFundMe, shared that Lisandra resides in New Jersey with her husband, far from her family who remain in Cuba.
“At 30, you expect your friend to share news like a new job or a pregnancy, not a leukemia diagnosis,” she expressed in the campaign's accompanying message.
The post portrays Lisandra as “a sweet, shy, loyal woman with a deep Christian faith,” who has always been there for others, yet now she is the one in need of support.
“She never asks for anything, she prays quietly, but now she needs our help to pay for treatments, pain medication, rent, and food,” the text adds.
Donations and prayers are requested to support Lisandra through this challenging period.
In addition to the GoFundMe, her friends in Cuba are gathering funds in a local account, which they then transfer via Zelle, due to the difficulties many Cubans face accessing international platforms, as reported by CiberCuba.
The treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia involves multiple rounds of intensive chemotherapy, specific medications, and frequent hospital stays, resulting in substantial expenses even with partial medical insurance.
Lisandra and her husband are currently facing financial hardships, as both are unemployed due to her medical condition.
The campaign, titled “Urgent Help for Lisandra with Leukemia,” aims to raise funds to cover her medical bills, rent, food, and other essential expenses during her treatment.
Donations can also be made within Cuba through an account set up by her family and friends, who subsequently channel the funds via Zelle to the United States.
Supporting Lisandra's Medical Journey
How can people support Lisandra financially?
Supporters can donate through the GoFundMe campaign or contribute to a local account in Cuba, which is then transferred via Zelle to the United States.
What challenges does Lisandra face during her treatment?
Lisandra faces financial difficulties due to the high cost of medical treatment, including multiple chemotherapy sessions, medications, and hospitalizations, compounded by unemployment.
Why is there a separate fundraising effort in Cuba?
A separate fundraising effort in Cuba exists because many Cubans have limited access to international fundraising platforms, so funds are collected locally and sent to the U.S. via Zelle.
