Mercedes de la Caridad de la Guardia Hernández, Prominent Lady in White, Passes Away in Cárdenas

Monday, December 8, 2025 by Sophia Martinez

At the age of 59, Mercedes de la Caridad de la Guardia Hernández, a notable member of the Ladies in White, passed away this Sunday in Matanzas.

The announcement was made by fellow Lady in White, Leticia Ramos Herrería, who described De la Guardia Hernández as a "courageous Cuban who, despite her declining health over the years, remained actively involved."

"Affectionately known as Mercy, she was the heart and soul of the Cárdenas delegation. Despite facing significant repression, jail time, and physical assaults, she always managed to lift our spirits with her charisma," commented the opposition member.

"Being far from my homeland, her departure pains me deeply as I won't be able to accompany her on her final journey to heaven, where I know God will welcome her with open arms," she concluded.

Berta Soler, the leader of the organization, echoed the sentiment: "We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. We have lost a brave fighter, a true Lady in White. May she rest in eternal peace. God bless her soul."

This marks the second piece of devastating news for the opposition group in recent weeks.

In mid-November, it was reported that the grandson of Olaida del Castillo, another member of the opposition movement, had died in Havana due to a mosquito-borne virus that has afflicted a large portion of Cuba's population.

The young boy died in the hospital after several days in critical condition, valiantly battling for his life.
