Cuban Grandmother in the U.S. Urgently Appeals for ICE to Release Her Daughter: "Her Baby Needs Her"

Sunday, December 7, 2025 by Henry Cruz

In a tearful plea, the mother of Lázara Campos Cabrera, a Cuban doctor held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Houston, has called for her daughter's release so she can care for her critically ill baby.

"I pray that someone opens the doors, so my daughter can be freed. Her baby needs her," the grandmother expressed in an interview with Telemundo 51. She shared that her granddaughter is in critical condition, and the family fears for her life.

The 29-year-old doctor was taken into custody during a routine ICE appointment in Houston, despite having no criminal record and complying with all her check-ins since 2021. Lázara entered the United States by crossing the border and was issued an I-220A form, allowing her to reside in the country under supervision.

Her daughter, Antonella, just 15 months old, suffers from two rare genetic syndromes that severely impact her health. The toddler relies on a ventilator, has a tracheostomy, and is fed through a tube. Although a nurse assists at home, her mother is her primary caregiver, uniquely trained to provide continuous care.

While ICE is aware of the baby's medical condition, they continue to detain Lázara, sparking concern and appeals from family and supporters who urge the case to be reviewed as a "humanitarian matter."

The family asserts that the child's physical and emotional stability hinges on her mother's presence. Since the detention, Antonella has displayed signs of deterioration, while the grandmother strives to maintain medical care with the help of specialized personnel.

"Her baby needs her," the grandmother reiterated, visibly distressed and fearing for her granddaughter's life.

The Cuban family implores immigration authorities to re-evaluate the case and immediately release Lázara Campos Cabrera, emphasizing that her detention jeopardizes the life of a severely ill child.
