A Cuban woman living in the United States recently took to TikTok to share the emotional journey of visiting her sister, who has been detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), after being separated for three long months without a hug.
In the video shared by user @mamasinlimites1, the woman tearfully explains that although she had seen her sister on previous occasions, their interactions were always "behind glass," preventing any physical contact.
"I couldn't give her the hug that we both desperately needed," she recounted, visibly moved.
She explained that her sister has been relocated three times to different detention centers, causing an emotional rollercoaster for the entire family. "Every transfer is exhausting, especially knowing there’s no control over the situation," she expressed.
Despite the detention center being nearly a three-hour drive from her home, she was determined to make the trip to see her sister. However, she encountered an unexpected hurdle upon arrival: "I didn’t check the center's rules before going and was surprised to find out you can't enter wearing sandals. I had to change in the car," she described.
What struck her the most, she admitted, was realizing it was a family detention center with many children present. "Seeing everything that is happening is truly heartbreaking," she lamented.
Despite the sadness, the day offered a "gift": she was finally able to embrace and touch her sister after such a long separation. "That hug recharged our souls. I just want to send strength and a hug to everyone going through the same ordeal. This, too, shall pass," she concluded.
The heartfelt account has touched hundreds of social media users, who expressed their solidarity and called for empathy towards families enduring the harsh reality of immigration detention in the United States.
