The Russian Embassy in Cuba has released a health alert for its citizens following a surge in dengue and chikungunya cases on the island, urging tourists to take extra precautions during their visit.

On Wednesday, the diplomatic mission shared a statement on social media highlighting that the warning is based on reports from Cuba's Ministry of Public Health regarding the increased prevalence of these mosquito-borne diseases.

"We strongly advise Russian tourists to wear protective clothing during peak mosquito activity hours, use repellents, and avoid stagnant freshwater bodies," the message advised, with the reminder to "Take care of yourself and your loved ones!"

The embassy reiterated its warning on the social media platform X, emphasizing the seriousness of the current epidemiological situation in the Caribbean nation.

In recent months, Cuban health authorities have acknowledged a rise in dengue cases in various provinces, particularly affecting the eastern and western regions of the country.

This increase in vector-borne diseases is occurring amid a healthcare crisis characterized by a shortage of insecticides, challenges in controlling the Aedes aegypti mosquito, and a general decline in the public health system.

International concern over Cuba's health situation has grown following reports of the spread of dengue and chikungunya fevers.

Several governments have issued advisories to their citizens. A particularly urgent call came from a Russian epidemiologist who urged the cancellation of travel to countries with active outbreaks, including Cuba, due to the risk of infection.

Canada has also issued a travel alert related to the chikungunya outbreak on the island, advising its citizens to take special precautions.

Similarly, the United States government has warned of the health risks for those planning to travel to Cuba, stressing the need for tourists to remain vigilant about epidemiological conditions.

Meanwhile, Mexico has advised its citizens to exercise caution and consider purchasing medical insurance before traveling, given the steady rise of mosquito-borne diseases in Cuba.
