A family in Guanabacoa, Havana lost their home and belongings in a devastating fire that broke out on Tuesday night following an extended power outage, according to local reports.
Cuban digital content creators shared videos of the tragic event on social media. The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault or short circuit when electricity was restored after a 12-hour blackout.
Influencer Yarelys Herrera Díaz documented the incident on Instagram, showing images of the blaze and the charred remnants of the destroyed home.
"After 12 hours of blackout, the power returned accompanied by the only light you never want to see near your home, that of a fire," expressed Herrera, visibly upset by the incident.
Although the cause of the fire remains unknown, Herrera confirmed that the residents, including a man known as Danielón, were unharmed physically.
She praised the quick response of the firefighting team, stating, "They acted incredibly fast, and I have to give them credit for that. I'm at a loss for words... such sadness."
The modest home, constructed with blocks, zinc sheets, and wood, was completely destroyed by the fire.
Despite the tragedy, Herrera remained hopeful, stating, "I want to believe that beautiful things will happen this month because after so much struggle and tears, good people deserve good fortune."
Content creator Yerry Sanabia Padrón also documented the tense moments on Facebook, as neighbors watched anxiously while the flames consumed the home and threatened to spread to other houses in the neighborhood, known as La Hata.
A massive column of smoke rose into the sky as dozens looked on, fearing the worst.
The footage shows the arrival of a fire truck and the efforts to extinguish the flames.
This unfortunate event left a family homeless. As of now, there has been no official information about the incident, nor is it known whether the affected family has received any assistance from the authorities.
Several fires have been reported throughout the country in recent weeks. In one incident in the Plaza de la Revolución district, a person lost their life.
Many fires are attributed to electrical failures due to power fluctuations following outages, the instability of the electrical system, inadequate infrastructure, and outdated wiring systems.
