The Havana Electric Company (EELH) announced that conditions are now in place to commence the restoration of electricity in Cuba's capital. This follows a widespread blackout that left millions in Havana without power, disrupting essential services.

In an official statement, the company highlighted that the recovery process would start at the 33-kilovolt (kV) level, with a focus on hospital circuits and water supply systems, which are deemed critical for the city's operations.

"Initially, we will re-energize substations that provide critical health services (hospitals) and the main water supply sources in the capital," specified the EELH.

This initiative aims to gradually stabilize the capital's electrical system, which was disrupted due to a disconnection in the western network that occurred early Wednesday morning. This incident left areas from Pinar del Río to Cienfuegos without electricity.

The company urged the public to stay informed through official channels—Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and the 18888 phone service—to track the progress of the restoration efforts.

This extensive blackout takes place amidst a national power generation shortfall exceeding 2,000 megawatts, keeping Cuba in a constant state of energy crisis.

As the UNE and the Electric Company investigate the cause of the malfunction, the restoration of power to hospitals and water systems offers some relief to Havana’s residents, who continue to endure prolonged periods without electricity or basic services.

As of 8:00 AM on Wednesday, the EELH reported partial restoration of the electrical service in the capital. According to the technical report, three substations and four distribution circuits have been re-energized, restoring power to 12,101 customers, equivalent to 8.11 megawatts (MW), or roughly 1.4% of the city.

The entity also confirmed that four hospitals and a key water supply source have been reconnected as part of priority actions to ensure essential health and water services in Havana.
