On Tuesday, the province of Villa Clara is mourning the loss of Dr. Eduardo Fernández Ruiz, a highly esteemed nephrologist whose contributions significantly shaped the medical community over more than fifty years.

The announcement of Dr. Fernández Ruiz's passing at age 72 was shared by Yandry Alfonso Chang on Facebook, sparking sorrow among colleagues, students, and patients. He is fondly remembered as a dedicated educator and exceptional professional.

Born on September 24, 1953, in Santa Clara, Fernández Ruiz pursued his medical education at the "Victoria de Girón" Medical Sciences Faculty in Havana. He embraced the regime's ideals, actively participating in political, cultural, and volunteer activities, joining the Union of Young Communists and later the Communist Party, according to Alfonso.

A Leader in Internal Medicine and Nephrology

After obtaining his degree, Fernández Ruiz specialized in Internal Medicine, quickly achieving a teaching rank and educating numerous health professionals.

In the late 1990s, due to a shortage of nephrology specialists in the province, he was sent to the Nephrology Institute in Havana. There, he completed a rigorous program with outstanding results, later joining the provincial nephrology service as a leader, mentor, and key figure.

By 1996, he had earned a second degree in Nephrology. He founded and chaired the nephrology department and the Villa Clara chapter of the Cuban Society of Nephrology, positions he held for two decades.

Eventually, he was promoted to assistant professor and, in 2009, became a master in medical emergencies.

International Commitment and Academic Legacy

Dr. Fernández Ruiz fulfilled international missions in Angola and Trinidad and Tobago, also training Ecuadorian nephrologists, thereby extending his influence beyond Cuba's borders.

His scholarly work included publications in both national and international journals and contributions to books on Internal Medicine, Intensive Care, and Nephrology, cementing his status as an academic authority.
