The Catholic community in Guantánamo-Baracoa is mourning the loss of Italian priest Mons. Pierluigi Manenti, affectionately known in Cuba as Father Luis. This devoted missionary spent over four decades serving in Latin America, dedicating his final years to the faithful in the eastern region of the island.

The news of his passing was conveyed to CiberCuba through a message, and the Diocese of Guantánamo-Baracoa shared a heartfelt farewell post on social media. According to those close to him, Manenti died overnight from Friday to Saturday, leaving behind a legacy of simplicity, dedication, and a profound commitment to the most vulnerable.

A Life of Service from Bergamo to Latin America

Born in Oltre il Colle, Italy, in 1950, Pierluigi Manenti entered the seminary at a young age and began his ministry in Grassobbio, where he served until 1981. That year marked the beginning of a life-changing journey as he embarked on a mission to Bolivia and later to Cuba, dedicating over forty years to pastoral work in these countries.

Those who worked alongside him describe him as a priest with boundless generosity, pastoral creativity, and an extraordinary ability to support the most fragile. Colleagues like Don Mario Maffi and Don Massimo Rizzi recall him as a man who lived with minimal possessions, returning to Italy with only the essentials despite years of service.

Enduring Impact in Cuba: Advocacy and Compassion

In Cuba, where he served for years amidst a backdrop of state atheism and religious restrictions, Manenti became a beacon for rebuilding community and spiritual life. His approach was characterized by closeness, active listening, immediate willingness to meet any need, and a practical, straightforward style of evangelism he termed "pastoral snack."

The San Antonio María Claret parish in San Antonio del Sur paid tribute to him, describing Manenti as a "faithful servant" and a pastor who never rested when it came to comforting, visiting, encouraging, blessing, or accompanying his community.

"He fed the hungry, visited the sick, comforted the sorrowful, lifted the fallen, and prayed ceaselessly for each of us," reads the farewell message shared by the diocese.

Additionally, the San Antonio del Sur Football League honored the priest: "Thanks to his support, tournaments like the Christmas Cup and the Easter Cup were born, becoming traditions that brought together young people, families, and players of all ages," they posted on Facebook.

A Legacy of Faith, Service, and Humanity

Beyond his religious mission, Manenti, or Father Luis as he was lovingly called, leaves behind a profound human legacy. His work strengthened the faith of countless families, united communities, and accompanied entire generations through moments of joy and sorrow.

Locals remember him as a priest who walked alongside them, who was always present where needed, and who prioritized his vocation above all else.

Final Farewell

In Italy, his body is being mourned at the House of Farewell in Grassobbio, with his funeral set to take place tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at his home parish.

Meanwhile, in Cuba, the community of San Antonio del Sur bids him farewell with the assurance of having had a servant who dedicated his life to accompany, listen, and support a people who embraced him as one of their own.
