Once again, Cuban basketball is marred by censorship, punitive actions, and disorganization. Shooting guard Karel Guzmán, considered one of the top players on the national team, found himself stranded at Havana's airport and removed from the trip to Argentina. This occurred shortly after he made statements that unsettled sports officials.

Guzmán, who previously played for Ciclista Olímpico in Argentina's National League and is currently signed with a Romanian team, was set to travel with the Cuban delegation for the second match in the FIBA 2027 World Cup Qualifiers. He had everything prepared, including an official passport, a confirmed ticket, and even covered his return expenses, as reported by sports journalist Henry Morales.

Following the recent game in Havana, where Cuba lost 80-68 to Argentina, Guzmán spoke candidly at the press conference. He asserted that the team's issues are not merely athletic but structural, criticizing the Cuban Basketball Federation for not appreciating the efforts of athletes who leave their families and clubs to represent the national team.

"We always come with the best intentions, but sometimes we arrive and encounter issues beyond basketball," he initially remarked. Later, in an audio clip leaked and shared by Morales, he was even more forthright: "The effort we make to play for the national team is not highly valued by the Federation. We have families abroad and commitments with clubs; if these conditions aren't recognized here, it becomes very difficult to move forward."

Just hours after these comments, Guzmán faced retaliation when the Federation withheld his passport at the airport, preventing him from boarding the flight with his teammates. Despite personally financing all travel expenses, he was effectively grounded.

Guzmán's absence is a significant setback for the team led by Onel Planas, especially after already losing Pedro Bombino to injury. With two critical players missing, Cuba is set to face Argentina on December 1 in Buenos Aires, within a group that includes Uruguay and Panama.

This incident once again exposes the systemic issues within Cuban sports, where athletes continue to compete out of love for their country but are repeatedly confronted by poor management, political repercussions, and a leadership that discourages talent.
