An employee at the Provincial Microbiology Laboratory in Bayamo, located in Granma province, has been apprehended by the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) agents for allegedly orchestrating the theft of crucial medical supplies from the facility.
The case details were shared on social media by Aytana Alama, who received the information from another employee at the laboratory.
The suspect reportedly pilfered essential items such as cotton, surgical gloves, scalpels, and medical cement, all vital for patient care and the laboratory's diagnostic operations.
"This person was fully aware of the lab's crucial role in safeguarding the public against infectious and parasitic diseases, yet chose to steal and sell these vital supplies on the black market," the insider revealed.
The Provincial Microbiology Laboratory in Bayamo plays a pivotal role in diagnosing and controlling infectious and exotic diseases in the eastern region of Cuba.
The loss of these supplies significantly hinders the already struggling healthcare system, which is grappling with shortages of materials, medications, and reagents amid Cuba's ongoing health crisis, according to the officialist profile.
The arrested employee allegedly sold the stolen supplies on the black market, where prices for medical materials have skyrocketed due to chronic shortages in hospitals and pharmacies.
"This unfortunate incident highlights not only unethical behavior but also the desperation and decay of the system. Even healthcare workers are resorting to corruption to survive," remarked a Bayamo healthcare professional.
The Ministry of the Interior's agents managed to capture the main suspect, although no official statement has been released by the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) or the provincial government regarding the incident.
The case has sparked outrage on social media, with users voicing concerns over security in healthcare facilities and institutional corruption.
"This is what happens when workers earn just 3,000 pesos and face dire poverty. While theft can't be justified, hunger and hopelessness are taking a toll," one social media user commented.
In recent months, several reports from CiberCuba have documented thefts of medications, hospital food, and medical supplies across various provinces, many of which end up being resold on the black market or through clandestine networks.
