The non-governmental organization Cubalex has uncovered a disturbing pattern of internal drug trafficking within several Cuban prisons throughout 2025. According to their findings, regime officials and State Security agents are allegedly involved in the smuggling and distribution of highly dangerous substances, including a notorious drug referred to as "chemical."

Reports have surfaced that in prisons like 1580 in San Miguel del Padrón, the Combinado del Este, and the detention centers of Aguacate, Ivanov, Ho Chi Minh, and Cuba Sí, drugs flow freely among inmates and guards. This exacerbates an already dire environment characterized by violence, malnutrition, and inadequate medical care.

Former prisoners from 1580, also known as El Pitirre, have exposed widespread corruption among the guards. According to witness statements, these officials are involved in smuggling drugs for sale within the facility.

In the Combinado del Este, activist Marcel Valdés has highlighted a well-established drug trafficking network operated by inmates who allegedly receive protection from high-ranking officials.

In Cuban prisons, drugs are sold alongside weapons and other goods, with officers turning a blind eye to these activities.

In Mayabeque, allegations have been made against officials at the Aguacate prison for engaging in trafficking and extortion. Meanwhile, in Cuba Sí in Holguín, at least six inmates reportedly died in 2024 due to overdoses and medical negligence.

Cubalex warns that these activities are indicative of a systemic corruption issue, where prison officials profit by selling permits, phone calls, and food, while punishing non-cooperative inmates through extortion or false accusations.

The organization emphasized the responsibility of the Cuban state to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals in its custody. However, institutional complicity has turned prisons into bastions of impunity and human degradation.

Cubalex has reiterated its call to victims and their families to report these abuses safely, offering confidentiality and free legal assistance.
