A violent altercation erupted early Sunday, November 23, at the renowned Estocolmo bar in Guantánamo, resulting in multiple injuries, damage to a hospital, and ongoing criminal proceedings against those involved.

The Ministry of the Interior (MININT) of Guantánamo confirmed the incident, stating they have clarified the events and strongly condemned such violent acts.

According to the official MININT report, which did not specify the exact number of injured individuals, the disturbances originated inside the bar, situated in the city center.

Many of those involved were reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, with some not even being local residents but rather visitors from Santiago de Cuba.

The conflict reportedly arose due to "passionate disputes," as the statement described, without providing further details.

Escalation Beyond the Bar's Doors

The bar's security promptly intervened, ejecting those involved, but the altercation intensified as it spilled onto the streets, where the fighting continued.

Several injured parties were taken to the provincial hospital in Guantánamo by private means.

Violence Reignites at the Hospital

However, the violence did not cease there. As the injured received medical attention, four individuals arrived at the hospital on two motorcycles, seemingly intent on reigniting the conflict.

The official report noted that these individuals "threw several stones at the vehicle that had transported the injured," causing significant damage to the rear windshield and two window panes of the hospital's entrance.

MININT labeled the incident as an attack on both public safety and collective property.

They assured that “all participants in this unfortunate event have been identified during the investigation and are being processed according to the severity of their actions, the circumstances, and current legislation.”

Debate Over Responsibility: Bar or Patrons?

Journalist Yosmany Mayeta shared the MININT statement on social media, sparking a debate regarding the Estocolmo bar's role in such incidents.

One commenter defended the establishment, arguing that the problem lies not with the bar but with the behavior of its patrons.

“It's one of the best bars. Issues arise based on how people choose to behave; some transform with alcohol and quickly start conflicts. We cannot blame the bar; it's about the type of people who visit it,” she remarked.

Others were more critical, pointing to the origins of some involved and the supposed reputation of the venue.

“Well, someday Santiago won't be in the headlines,” quipped one user, while another added, “Yes, they were from Santiago.”

A third comment was more straightforward and condemning: “That bar is a den of conflict and drug use, they should shut it down for good.”

The Ministry of the Interior concluded their note with a firm message against such breaches of public order.

“We reiterate our strong rejection of these behaviors that threaten public tranquility, mutual respect, and the safety of individuals and collective property,” they stated.

As investigations continue, this incident highlights a troubling rise in violence within Cuba's nightlife, exacerbated by alcohol consumption and often drug use.
