Cuban Mother Arrested for Shooting Her Son in Hialeah Gardens

A Cuban-born woman remains in custody, accused of shooting her son during a domestic altercation in Hialeah Gardens on Sunday afternoon, as reported by official sources.

Identified as Grisel Pérez, age 63, the mother was apprehended following the shooting incident at her home located on NW 88th Avenue and NW 113th Street in Miami-Dade County, according to Telemundo 51.

Responding to an emergency call, the Miami-Dade Fire Department discovered the victim, Joel Pineda, 36, suffering a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Due to the critical nature of his injuries, he was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Pérez informed Hialeah Gardens Police Department officers that her son had arrived at her home earlier on Sunday, and she allowed him in despite noticing that he "was acting strangely, as if under the influence of drugs."

While seated in the living room, Pineda allegedly produced a .38 caliber revolver and fired a shot that struck a decorative fireplace. The two engaged in a heated argument, during which Pérez demanded that he leave. Angered, he began to destroy furniture before moving to the backyard, where he discharged another shot into the ground.

Per the arrest report, Pérez retreated to her bedroom, retrieved her own firearm, confronted her son, and insisted he vacate the premises. During the subsequent events, she fired at him and then called 911.

Both firearms were recovered by investigators at the scene. Pérez was taken into custody with charges of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Police also secured footage from a surveillance camera located at the rear door, capturing the incident area. An officer noted that the video evidence aligns with Pérez's account of the events.

A woman who identified herself as Pérez's cousin told Telemundo 51 that Pérez might have acted in self-defense, citing Pineda's prior drug issues. "I am devastated; it's an awful situation," expressed Elizabeth Brito.

Court records reveal that in January 2020, Pérez sought a domestic violence protection order against her son.

The son remains hospitalized in serious yet stable condition, as reported by the TV station.

During Pérez's court appearance on Monday, the judge appointed a public defender and denied her bail. The accused is scheduled for another court session on Tuesday as the investigation continues.
