Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday his plans to visit China in April after what he described as a "fantastic" phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"I just had an outstanding phone call with President Xi of China. We discussed a range of topics, including Ukraine/Russia, fentanyl, soybeans, and other agricultural commodities," Trump stated on Truth Social.

Trump revealed that President Xi extended an invitation to visit Beijing in April, which he accepted. In return, Trump invited Xi to the United States for a state visit later in the year.

He emphasized that the relationship with China remains "extremely robust," and noted that they built upon their "successful meeting in South Korea three weeks ago."

"Since then, both sides have made significant progress in keeping our agreements updated and accurate. Now, we can focus on the broader picture," Trump elaborated.

Meanwhile, China's state news agency reported that Xi discussed with Trump his demand for the return of Taiwan to Chinese control.

This conversation is part of the ongoing cooperation framework that Washington and Beijing have been negotiating for months, which includes commercial and strategic commitments.

In a previous meeting last October in South Korea, the two leaders reached a commercial understanding in June that saw the U.S. impose a 55% tariff on Chinese goods, while China maintained a 10% tariff on American products.

The agreement also included a noteworthy gesture toward the academic community: the U.S. administration will authorize visas for Chinese students enrolled in American universities.
