Spanish Artist Wayota OD Returns to Cuba: "This Island Changed My Life"

The Spanish artist Wayota OD has made a reappearance on social media with a video filmed in Cuba, signaling his return after spending several months in Spain recovering from surgery. In the footage shared on TikTok and Instagram, Wayota mentions that “some returns are not announced, they are felt,” and explains his comeback “after hospitals, surgeries, months of rehabilitation, silence, and questions,” because “this island changed my life.” He adds that “Cuba welcomed me as if I had never left” and that he returned to “finish what I started,” ending with the statement: “I’m working on something big.”

The video features everyday scenes from Havana, with the caption “I’ve been in Cuba for two weeks and no one knew.” Followers in the comments section celebrated his return, encouraging him to continue creating, with messages wishing him joy and success in his new endeavors. Some highlighted his recovery and reminded him to take care of himself post-surgery. However, there were also those who expressed concern over his decision to return, citing the current risks and shortages in the country.

Wayota OD first arrived in Cuba in March of this year, intending to record a music album and share his life experiences on the island. Shortly after his arrival, he encountered power outages and shortages, experiences he documented on social media with amazement and respect for the resilience of the Cuban people. In a video, he admitted, “I really don’t know how Cubans manage,” recounting spending 48 hours without electricity during his first weekend in Havana, as narrated in one of his early posts about life on the island.

At that time, he explained that many called him “crazy” for moving to Cuba, but he defended his decision, asserting that he needed “to connect with the only country in the world with such a diverse musical culture.” However, his journey was not without challenges. In April, he reported being the victim of a scam during a night in Havana, where a woman allegedly stole money and belongings from him while he slept, as he described in a video following the event.

A month later, marking his first month on the island, he shared an optimistic message stating, “Life gave me a second chance, and I decided to leave everything behind to move to the island of blackouts to make my own music,” also affirming that “no matter what happens, I won’t regret it.” This sentiment was echoed in another of his posts about his Cuban life, showcasing scenes from his daily activities and celebrating the completion of his album.

Weeks later, he announced he needed to return to Spain for surgery due to a relapse related to a previous stroke. In a video, he stated, “I urgently need surgery. I don’t yet know what might happen to me. I haven’t left yet, but I already want to return. Here in Cuba, I found something unique,” as revealed in his pre-surgery message.

His current return, months after that surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process, signals a new chapter in his story. Although he hasn’t disclosed details about his plans, he hinted at working on a new artistic project by stating he’s “preparing something big.”
