In the wake of a severe accident on November 10 in La Caoba, Venezuela municipality, Ciego de Ávila, Gerardo Guerra, aged 42, has succumbed to his critical injuries.
Guerra was among the cooperative members of the CCS El Fortín, who were injured when the bus they were traveling in collided with a cart during the early hours of the morning.
According to Dr. Hecney Padrón González, an expert in Intensive Care and Emergencies at Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial Hospital, as reported by Radio Surco journalist Odania García Heredia, Guerra underwent two surgeries for a closed abdominal trauma and numerous internal injuries. Despite these efforts, he could not be saved. From the moment of his admission, he was in critical condition and passed away in the intensive care unit.
The accident resulted in 27 individuals being injured, with 17 already discharged with no life-threatening conditions. However, five patients remain in the orthopedic department with fractures of the humerus, tibia, and spine. Additionally, a young man is in serious condition after undergoing surgery for an abdominal trauma.
Two of the injured were moved to the Morón hospital for neurosurgical care due to minor head injuries, while another patient underwent emergency eye surgery at the ophthalmological center and is recovering well.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:40 a.m. on Monday, when a Girón bus carrying agricultural workers collided with a cart on the stretch known as La Caoba, part of the Simón Reyes Popular Council.
The cooperative members were en route to participate in the “Fuerza Oriente” campaign, which has been mobilizing companies and entities in the province since late October to support areas hard-hit by Hurricane Melissa.
As authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident, the tragedy has left a profound impact on a community already marked by the stark contrast between the solidarity that brought them together and the loss that now envelops them in mourning.
