On Sunday, the Cuban volleyball community was struck with grief as it lost one of its most celebrated male players, Lázaro Beltrán, at the age of 61.

The somber announcement was shared on Facebook by his former teammate, Ihosvany Hernández, sparking a wave of condolences across social media platforms.

"Brother, thank you for being a part of my growth as a man and person. Rest in peace #6," Hernández wrote on Facebook, paying tribute to his departed friend.

Other prominent figures from the high-net sport in Cuba also expressed their sorrow in response to Hernández's post.

"RIP, brother. Such sad news. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends," commented Raúl Diago, a renowned setter, on Facebook.

Orlando Samuels added, "A very sad piece of news about the passing of this great volleyball player and wonderful teammate. Another great from the glorious 90s generation has left us. My heartfelt condolences to family and friends. RIP."

The independent outlet Swing Completo recalled Beltrán's contributions to the team that earned the silver medal at the World Championship in Brazil in 1990. He was also part of the squad that secured the Pan American title in Havana in 1991 and the Central American Games titles in Santiago de los Caballeros in 1986 and Ponce in 1993.

After retiring in 1993, Beltrán moved to the United States, where he pursued a successful career as a coach, eventually leading the U.S. women's national team.
