Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz of Miami-Dade County identified the individual responsible for the tragic death of Officer Devin Jaramillo, who was killed during a traffic incident in Kendall on Friday.
In a press briefing, Sheriff Cordero-Stutz provided preliminary details about the case and emphasized the need to dispel circulating rumors. She clarified that the incident was not an ambush on the officer.
The event unfolded at approximately 3:50 p.m. on Friday when 27-year-old Jaramillo responded to a minor traffic accident near Southwest 122nd Avenue and 128th Street. A verbal altercation ensued between Jaramillo and the attacker, who was directly involved in the crash, leading to a physical struggle.
During the confrontation, the assailant managed to seize the officer's firearm and shot him multiple times. The attacker then returned to his vehicle and took his own life. Jaramillo was rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The Miami Herald reported that the suspect was identified as 21-year-old Steven David Rustrian. While he had no criminal record in Florida, online databases suggest he might have been involved in a police chase in New York in May.
Sheriff Cordero-Stutz stated that no further details regarding the suspect's potential past incidents would be disclosed until the investigation progresses.
"Behind the uniform, we are human. I want to share a bit about Devin Jaramillo, a hero born right here in South Florida. He was smart, beautiful, an athlete. He graduated from Killian High School and later from the University of Central Florida with Magna Cum Laude, the highest honors," she noted.
"He was a young man who could have pursued any career he desired, but he chose to serve our community and paid the ultimate price. I urge our community to keep us in their prayers because we need them," expressed the visibly moved Sheriff.
