In the early hours of Saturday, a tragic event unfolded in Tampa, Florida, when a car allegedly involved in illegal street racing lost control and plowed into a crowd outside a nightclub in the bustling Ybor City neighborhood.

The crash resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to 13 others, according to reports from local authorities.

The Tampa Police Department reported that the accident took place around 12:45 a.m. on 7th Avenue, just outside the well-known establishment, Bradley’s on 7th.

Although the venue is a popular gathering spot for the LGTBIQ+ community, officials clarified that the incident was not a targeted attack.

Three victims died at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Nine others were taken to medical facilities, with two of those in critical condition.

Two additional individuals sustained minor injuries and declined hospital treatment, as per the police report.

“What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy. Our hearts go out to the victims' loved ones and everyone impacted,” stated Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw.

“Reckless driving endangered innocent lives. We are dedicated to seeking justice for the victims and their families,” he added.

The authorities identified the driver as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, who was apprehended at the scene.

According to reports, the Tampa Police Department’s aerial unit spotted a vehicle driven by Sampson speeding down Interstate 275 around 12:40 a.m.

Shortly thereafter, the car was observed participating in street races on Hillsborough Avenue, near 22nd Street.

The Florida Highway Patrol attempted to stop him, but the driver continued accelerating towards Nebraska Avenue and then 7th Avenue, where he lost control and crashed into a business, hitting a group of pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Bradley Nelson, the owner of the establishment, confirmed in a statement that the vehicle first struck three people on the sidewalk before crashing into the venue’s patio.

“This event has been incredibly traumatic for my entire staff and me. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives and with all who were injured,” Nelson expressed.

The Ybor City area, known for its vibrant nightlife and cultural diversity, was cordoned off for several hours as forensic and emergency teams processed the scene.
