A Cuban migrant detained for two months by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Texas is voicing concerns about his deteriorating health, citing a lack of adequate medical care.
"I'm losing my sight and no one helps," stated Ángel Vera Oliva, an Austin resident, from his cell, as reported by Univision Austin.
Vera was taken into custody on September 2 after attending an immigration appointment in San Antonio. Since that time, he has been held at a detention center in Caney City, located east of Texas, where his family claims he has not received necessary treatment for a chronic illness.
According to his wife, who chose to remain anonymous, the situation is dire. "I am going to have to move with my family to Florida because there's nothing else I can do. I need help to take care of my son and start working," she expressed tearfully.
The Cuban suffers from ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory disease affecting the spine that necessitates ongoing medication. His sister, Naiviv Vera, recounted that he was undergoing medical treatment at the time of his arrest. "He explained that he was receiving IV drips for his condition, yet they still detained him," she protested.
Recently, Ángel has also developed uveitis, an eye inflammation that can lead to vision loss if untreated. "The light hurts, my eye burns, and I still haven't seen a specialist," he shared during a call from the detention center.
Dr. Illan Shapiro from AltaMed explained to Univision that uveitis can stem from infections or autoimmune diseases and requires immediate attention. "When that part of the eye becomes inflamed, light starts to cause pain and can damage internal structures if not addressed," he warned.
Despite the family's pleas and the seriousness of his condition, ICE has not responded to Univision regarding the medical care the Cuban detainee is receiving. Meanwhile, his family is urging for his release on health grounds, fearing that his condition worsens with each day in custody.
