Shock Over Sudden Passing of Young Radio Director in Holguín

The radio station Radio Angulo in Holguín has announced the untimely death of Elioneris Leyva Reyes, a promising young director of Radio Juvenil Cuba and a fifth-year Social Communication student. His passing has sent waves of sorrow through the radio and university communities in the province.

Reports suggest that Leyva Reyes took his own life on the night of October 30, amidst the challenging circumstances brought on by Hurricane Melissa's impact on the region.

The official announcement from Radio Angulo stated that "his decision was to leave," highlighting that the young director remained committed to his work even during the hurricane, dedicating himself to what he loved most: his beloved radio station.

Natalia Díaz Riverón, the head of the provincial radio system, publicly shared the deep grief felt by his colleagues. "It is a sad moment, and as is often the case, unexpected. Losing a young person who had so much life ahead of them is painful, and it hurts even more because of the exceptional individual we are bidding farewell to today," she wrote.

Díaz Riverón remembered Elioneris as an enthusiastic and respected professional. "We can still picture him, inexperienced yet always eager to learn, facing every task with a smile and the confidence of someone who inspires trust," she added.

She emphasized his dedication to radio and the lasting impression he left on colleagues and friends: "He was young, almost a child, who quickly earned the respect and affection of everyone he met, leaving behind his laughter, his genuine kindness, and his willingness to help."

"May these words reach his soul, and may he know, wherever he goes, that we remain here, mourning his departure. Although he chose to leave, it deeply moves us to know we will never again see him smile at life or feel his sincere affection. Rest in peace, dear friend, dear colleague," concluded Díaz Riverón.

Mourning at the University of Holguín From the University of Holguín, where he was completing his final year in Social Communication, Jessica Vela Batista also expressed her sorrow over the news.

"With profound sadness, our university community laments the loss of Elioneris Reyes Leyva... His departure leaves a tremendous void among classmates, faculty, and friends, who will always remember his dedication, joy, and participative spirit," Vela Batista wrote on social media.

"Brother: you shouldn't have left now" Colleagues and peers from various radio stations across the country also shared their grief.

Journalist Yoandris Cedeño recalled the young man with an emotional message: "From the moment I met you at the National Cuban Radio Festival, I knew you were brave, intelligent, and highly professional... Later, I learned that you were not just that calm voice as a host but also the director of Radio Juvenil, committed and passionate."

Cedeño also reflected on the shared moments and their mutual passion for radio. "Brother: you shouldn't have left now... I will miss you as I did the first day we met as two die-hard radio fans; radio runs in the blood and heart, as we both carried it."
