Devastating Impact: Hurricane Melissa Ravages Cuba's Iconic El Cobre Church

Friday, October 31, 2025 by Albert Rivera

Hurricane Melissa unleashed its fury on eastern Cuba with relentless winds and torrential rains, leaving behind extensive damage to the Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre. This iconic church stands as a testament to the faith of the Cuban people and is one of the country's most revered religious landmarks.

Social media platforms, notably TikTok, have been inundated with images revealing the catastrophic state of the church. User @rachelita0612 shared particularly striking footage capturing the aftermath of the storm.

Outside the basilica, a marble statue of an angel was knocked over and shattered into pieces at the main entrance, highlighting the intensity of the storm's impact.

The church's exterior walls now bear signs of wear, dampness, and stains from the relentless rains, compounded by broken windows and damaged stained glass.

Inside, the situation is equally grim: several historic windows and stained glass panels have collapsed, scattering glass and wooden debris across the floor.

In some sections, stained walls and structural damage to the church's interior reflect the destruction of a significant cultural and religious heritage site for Cubans.

Located in Santiago de Cuba, the Basilica of El Cobre is the country's main shrine and a pilgrimage destination for thousands each year. The devastation has deeply affected the faithful, who are now calling for assistance to restore this sacred site.

As of now, church authorities have not released an official assessment of the damage or announced when restoration work might begin.

Hurricane Melissa has wreaked havoc across several provinces in eastern Cuba, causing flooding, power outages, and severe damage to religious and heritage sites, exacerbating the island's already dire economic situation.
