Janet Díaz, a mother from Camagüey whose daughter is suffering from dengue, has publicly accused Zadiel Estrada Curbelo, the director of the Camagüey Electric Company, of alleged corruption.

"I make this complaint public, and I'm not hiding behind any fake profile. Zadiel Estrada, director of the Camagüey Electric Company, explain to me how it's possible that all of Camagüey is in darkness, with only two or three hours of power, while General Gómez at Damas Medio has been lit for three days straight. Coincidentally, your father and family live on that street," Díaz stated in a Facebook comment retrieved by opposition figure Saúl Manuel.

Díaz highlighted that the street in question is where the official's family resides. "You are corrupt. I have family too. My six-year-old daughter is suffering from the dengue virus. Our street is full. My daughter cried all night from the heat due to the rash. We're forced to sleep with windows open, vulnerable to mosquitoes," she lamented.

The mother criticized Estrada Curbelo for taking advantage of such a distressing situation. "How long are we going to tolerate corrupt leaders like you abusing the hardworking public? All I can say is you're a corrupt and inept person. This is an abuse of power, but your day is coming, and we'll see what you do when Cuba is free," she concluded her statement.

Power Outages and Natural Disasters Compound Issues

On Saturday, Cuba remained plagued by power outages as the eastern part of the country braced for the arrival of Hurricane Melissa. According to the Electric Union's report, the service was disrupted throughout the day and continued into the early hours of Sunday.

The peak disruption due to insufficient generation capacity was recorded at 1809 MW at 7:50 PM, they reported.

Understanding the Power Crisis in Cuba

What caused the power outages in Camagüey?

The power outages in Camagüey were primarily caused by a deficit in generation capacity, exacerbated by ongoing infrastructure issues and management decisions.

How is the dengue outbreak affecting residents?

The dengue outbreak has severely impacted residents, with many experiencing symptoms like rashes and fevers. The power outages have worsened the situation by forcing families to sleep with open windows, exposing them to more mosquito bites.
