Authorities Rule Out Train Accident in Discovery of Body Near Railway in Santiago de Cuba

The Cuban Railways Union (UFC) stated on Monday that the man found dead beside the railway in Santiago de Cuba did not die due to a train accident, according to preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation. In an informational note shared on social media, the state-run company clarified that the body was discovered "the morning before yesterday" on a section of the railway in the eastern city, but investigations revealed that no train struck the person.

"The death was not caused by a train accident. Investigations confirm that the individual was not hit by a train," the official statement declared, seeking to end the speculations that emerged following the discovery.

According to the UFC, the section where the body was found is exclusively used by national trains for car maneuvering, and no train passed through the area the night before. The discovery, initially reported by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, caused a stir among Santiago's residents, who expressed concern about rising violence and the lack of timely information from the authorities.

Locals from the area, situated between Paseo de Martí and Avenida Patria, claim that it is a common shortcut for pedestrians navigating between the city's two main thoroughfares. However, the incident reignited discussions about growing insecurity and the lack of patrols in poorly lit areas.

So far, the deceased's identity and the exact cause of death have not been disclosed, as competent authorities continue their investigations. The Cuban Railways Union pledged to keep the public informed through its official channels as new details about the case emerge.
