Inmate Dies in Cuban Prison Due to Lack of Medical Care

Serguey Marrero Faure, an inmate at the Guantánamo Provincial Prison, passed away over the weekend due to insufficient medical attention while under the custody of the Cuban regime, reported the non-governmental organization Cubalex. According to the organization, Marrero died on Saturday, October 11, after experiencing "a health condition that was not properly addressed" inside the prison.

Reports provided to Cubalex indicated that the prisoner was suffering from leg pain and had been taken to the prison’s medical facility, where he was diagnosed with a blood clot but did not receive any treatment. "Shortly thereafter, he lost his life," the organization disclosed on social media.

Marrero's family, who had visited him days before his death, told Cubalex that he "was in good health" and is now demanding answers from the authorities. The statement highlights that no official details regarding the circumstances of Marrero’s death have been disclosed up to now.

Ongoing Negligence in Cuban Prisons

Cubalex has verified 35 deaths of inmates on the island throughout 2025. The organization, which offers legal assistance and advocates for human rights in Cuba, stressed that these incidents expose negligence, inadequate medical care, violence, and the lack of independent investigations, further illustrating the inhumane conditions prevalent in the nation’s prisons.

They also emphasized the duty of prison authorities to ensure timely and adequate medical care for all inmates and to promptly investigate deaths occurring within the penitentiary system.

Widespread Criticism and Violations

The frequent deaths of inmates in Cuban prisons have sparked significant criticism of the island's regime for the inhumane conditions within the penal system and the denial or delay of medical attention as a repressive tactic. The State continues to fail in its obligation to uphold the basic rights of individuals deprived of their liberty in Cuba, allowing systemic abuses and degrading conditions, according to the Cuban Prisons Documentation Center (CDPC), based in Mexico.

In its August monthly report, the organization documented 75 instances of human rights violations in penitentiary centers. During that month, four deaths were confirmed, highlighting two structural issues in Cuban prisons: inadequate medical care and institutional indifference. These figures represent an underreporting of actual events due to official opacity.
