Cuban activist Rosa María Payá, a member of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH), delivered a passionate speech during a press conference at the Cuban American National Foundation (FNCA) headquarters in Miami. The event was held in support of opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer, who was exiled by the Cuban regime this Monday.
"José Daniel Ferrer is a free man, and his survival is a testament to his commitment to continue fighting against the tyranny that has now forced his family into exile," Payá declared, condemning the regime's deceit. "Make no mistake, the regime lies, has lied before, and will continue to lie," she warned.
The head of the Cuba Decide platform praised Ferrer's dedication to Cuba's freedom, noting that his arrival in exile signifies renewed momentum for the opposition both inside and outside the island. "José Daniel Ferrer is a hero to all Cubans. We've heard him here, and we've heard his unwavering dedication to the cause of freedom, which is now strengthened by having him among us," she stated.
A Witness to Systematic Abuses
Payá highlighted Ferrer's role as a leader of UNPACU, emphasizing his status as an undeniable witness to the systematic abuses suffered by Cuban political prisoners. "He is an irrefutable witness to the cruelty against Cuban political prisoners," she pointed out.
In her remarks, Payá expressed gratitude to those who assisted Ferrer and his family in reaching the United States safely. "We deeply thank the State Department, the Cuban American Foundation, and José Daniel's family, who have tirelessly worked to ensure his safety," she said.
"Now he is safe, he is with us, and he is united with the Cuban opposition, both on and off the island, with one goal in mind: changing the system towards democracy, freeing all political prisoners, and achieving freedom for all Cubans," she concluded.
Commitment to a Short Exile
Welcoming Ferrer to exile, Payá assured, "This exile will be short, I promise you." Her commitment to the democratic cause in Cuba remains steadfast. Earlier, on her X profile, Payá stated, "The dictatorship has forced José Daniel Ferrer and his family into exile. Let his oppressors not be mistaken: this exile will be brief."
This Monday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio celebrated Ferrer's arrival in the U.S. following his banishment and called for the release of over 700 political prisoners still detained in Cuba.
