Maydelín Álvarez Avilés recently celebrated a significant personal and professional milestone by becoming the first woman to drive a bus in Las Tunas. In a heartfelt message shared on her Facebook profile, she expressed gratitude to her parents, friends, and local transportation officials for their support.

"Today, I can proudly say I am the first woman bus driver in Las Tunas. This proves that dreams are not just dreams; you have to fight to achieve them," she wrote with emotion. Her post was met with hundreds of congratulatory and proud messages from well-wishers. "I want to see you driving a local route and give me a lift," joked Leonel Avilés, while other users praised her bravery and professionalism.

Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Field

Some, like Ángel Cabrales, noted that while female bus drivers already exist in Havana, Maydelín's achievement is "another step forward" for the women of Las Tunas. "Show Las Tunas and all of Cuba that women can indeed succeed," encouraged Esteban Manzano, a fellow driver who congratulated her based on his own experience behind the wheel.

In Cuba, where public transportation struggles due to severe resource and maintenance shortages, the inclusion of women in such roles remains uncommon, despite official rhetoric about gender equality and job opportunities.

Pioneers in Cuban Transportation

Idania Perea León, from the province of Artemisa, holds the distinction of being the first woman on the island to become a driver for the Empresa de Ómnibus Nacionales, boasting over 25 years of experience in a field traditionally dominated by men. Alongside Gilma Pérez Pérez, they are currently the only two Cuban women employed in this profession within the organization.

The first driver's license issued to a woman in Havana dates back to the early 20th century, awarded to María Calvo y Nodarse, famously known as La Macorina.
