The renowned Cuban singer Eduardo Antonio, popularly known as El Divo de Placetas, has publicly voiced his support for Cuban migrants holding I-220A status amid the growing uncertainty faced by thousands in the United States. Through a heartfelt message shared on his social media, the artist extended his solidarity, stating, “It's unfair to judge the just because of the unjust. Not all with I-220A are criminals; they came here seeking freedom, fleeing dictatorship, and looking for prosperity and the numerous benefits this country has provided to many of us.”
El Divo highlighted his own journey to the United States, similar to that of many Cubans who arrived by sea, air, or land, availing themselves of the Cuban Adjustment Act. He empathizes with those caught in the current immigration limbo without clear answers.
“They have rights too; they deserve not to be in immigration limbo. Many of these I-220A holders, now labeled as criminals, protested on July 11, 2021, in Cuba, something many of us here have not done,” he remarked.
Drawing from personal experience, Eduardo Antonio mentioned that his husband, Roy García, is among the numerous Cubans with I-220A experiencing pressure and uncertainty: “This issue is personal for me because my husband is I-220A, and I know many like him who are dignified, decent, honorable, hardworking, and remarkable individuals.”
He firmly criticized the judgments and stigmatization of those with this immigration status: “Many speak about and live off the history of communism in Cuba, speaking without the pain that many I-220A have endured. These individuals also have a purpose in life, and they deserve to fulfill that purpose. We are not in a position to deny them, to point fingers, or to judge them.”
The artist reaffirmed his Cuban identity, making it clear that although he is grateful to Mexico, where he developed part of his career, his heart remains loyal to the island.
“I will never betray my heritage. I love Mexico; Mexico gave me everything, but I will never forget that I am Cuban. Cuba comes first, Cuba is in my blood, I feel the pain of Cuba and everything happening there, and I feel for everything that happens to the I-220A holders,” he declared.
In conclusion, he urged his followers to show empathy and humanity toward those who are currently navigating complex immigration processes.
