Young Cuban Veterinarian Rescues Hutia from Religious Sacrifice

Sunday, October 5, 2025 by Matthew Diaz

A young Cuban veterinarian and content creator, José Ibraín Venereo Jiménez, successfully prevented a hutia from being sacrificed for religious rituals and ensured its safe return to a natural habitat. In a video shared on his Instagram account, José explained how he discovered the animal was for sale online and paid 5,000 pesos to prevent it from ending up in the wrong hands.

"The hutia stayed with me for quite a while at home until I found a suitable place to release it," he recounted. During its stay, the rodent, which José named Goku, even bit him on the hand. "Check it out, I got bitten by a hutia. Yeah, a hutia bite mark," he joked, showing the marks of the incident.

The release process proved challenging. José transported the animal in a closed case to avoid detection and took it to a nearby forest. The hutia was initially fearful and hesitant to venture out, cautiously peering at the surroundings as it adjusted to the new environment.

In the end, José carefully guided Goku to a tree, from which it descended and quickly disappeared, blending into its natural setting. In another video, José elaborated on the characteristics of these rodents endemic to Cuba, emphasizing their critically endangered status. "Don't hunt them, man. Many people here eat them, hunt them, or keep them as pets, which contributes to their extinction," he warned his followers.

"If anyone comes across or acquires one of these endangered animals, don't hesitate to contact me. I'll ensure they are freed, placed in a shelter, or returned to their ecosystem to live freely," he assured. This rescue adds to previous stories of this veterinarian, who, in September, touched the hearts of thousands online by attempting to release three turtles.

On that occasion, while two turtles quickly adapted to their habitat, a third showcased a special bond with José, floating motionless and observing him before its release—a gesture many interpreted as a sign of connection and gratitude.

José's actions have been celebrated across social media as an example of environmental awareness and respect for Cuban fauna. Goku's rescue story highlights not only the vulnerability of endemic species against human exploitation but also the potential for citizens to respond with responsibility and empathy to these challenges.
