A group of criminals ransacked and vandalized the Microbiology Lab at the Diez de Octubre Clinical Surgical Hospital, commonly known as La Dependiente. This incident resulted in the destruction of samples and reagents, leading to the facility's closure for nearly a month.

Authorities from the health and police departments reported on Friday that, following a citizen's complaint, the Ministry of the Interior identified one of the suspects. A search of the suspect's home led to the recovery of part of the stolen items. The investigation, conducted alongside the Penal Instruction Body, led to the arrest of three more alleged perpetrators and the recovery of the stolen equipment.

During a ceremony held by the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) of Cerro municipality, the hospital administration received back four refrigerators, an air conditioner, and a computer that had been taken during the heist. Yanet Cristóbal Morales, the hospital director, expressed gratitude for the Ministry of the Interior's swift action and the public's assistance, describing the incident as an "attack on public health" that compromised patient care.

Impact on Healthcare Services

"The Microbiology Lab is a crucial component of our services, delivering excellent results due to its dedicated and cohesive team. The theft of the refrigerators forced us to shut down the lab for nearly a month, as we had nowhere to store samples and reagents, significantly affecting patient care," Morales stated.

Lieutenant Rebeca Rodríguez Almarales, an investigator with the PNR Cerro, mentioned that efforts are ongoing to recover additional items stolen in previous incidents at the hospital. She also noted ongoing investigations into similar occurrences at the Salvador Allende Clinical Surgical Hospital, also known as La Covadonga.

The Broader Crisis

Local authorities from the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and the People's Power, alongside hospital staff, participated in the ceremony condemning the criminal acts that disrupted the hospital's operations and services to the community.

Amidst the severe shortage of medications in Cuba, affecting both chronic patients and those needing urgent treatment, such thefts exacerbate an already dire situation. The Cuban public health system is plagued by a persistent scarcity of drugs, with only about 30% of essential medicines available. This lack of basic supplies forces many Cubans to rely on the black market and foreign donations.

In a related incident months ago, authorities in Granma detained a nurse from the Celia Sánchez Manduley Hospital in Manzanillo. She was caught in the act while leaving the facility with a haul of stolen drugs and medical supplies during her shift, according to sources linked to the Ministry of the Interior.

The report noted that the hospital's security personnel and police officers apprehended the nurse as she exited the institution, "with a load of medications she allegedly intended to steal, which were meant for the patients under her care." Photographs accompanying the report showed medicines and supplies reportedly seized from the healthcare worker, including vials of omeprazole and ampules of furosemide, dipyrone, and metoclopramide for injection; blisters of tablets; dozens of disposable syringes; and additional equipment and saline bags.
