Justice Demanded as Ron the Beagle Recovers from Attack in Havana

Ron, a beagle who suffered a vicious attack in Havana, is beginning to show signs of recovery. Meanwhile, his owner and animal rights groups are fervently calling for legal justice, as the incident has sparked widespread outrage across the nation.

The brutal assault took place in Casablanca, a neighborhood in the Havana municipality of Regla. Public reports allege that the dog was savagely attacked with a machete by a man named Julio C. Dueñas, a local resident and purportedly an active military officer.

In a post on the Facebook group "Adopción de perros en Cuba," Salett Pérez, Ron's owner, shared updates on her dog's health and expressed her determination. "His prognosis is improving, his vital signs are strong, he can see, hear, and smell, and he's slowly returning to the cheerful pup he always was. He is my champion," she wrote, expressing gratitude for the support while making it clear that they are not accepting donations, as they can cover Ron's medical and food expenses.

Salett emphasized her call for justice through lawful means. "Yes, I want justice for my dog... but what I'm seeking is legal justice. The man should face the law. I do not condone violence. Every life is valuable and deserves protection," she declared.

According to the Bienestar Animal Cuba (BAC) organization, Ron was discovered by his owner lying on the ground, bleeding, with three machete wounds to his head. The assailant claimed that the dog had killed some chickens, but witnesses and activists dispute this, insisting that this was not the first time the man acted violently.

"The man simply unleashed his violence on a defenseless being," BAC stated, highlighting previous aggressive behavior from the alleged perpetrator. The group also noted that the case has been forwarded to several international agencies to prevent the accused from evading accountability. They plan to file a formal complaint with Animal Health authorities to activate institutional mechanisms for prosecution.

BAC cautioned that while Ron is receiving treatment and showing improvement, he may still face serious long-term effects. "This case is titled Justice for Ron, but it also symbolizes the fight against impunity," they emphasized.

In the meantime, the online community has responded vigorously, sharing posts with hashtags like #JusticeForRon and #StopAnimalAbuse, and organizing symbolic actions such as changing profile pictures to support the cause.

This incident, beyond its individual tragedy, has once again highlighted the deficiencies in Cuba's animal protection system, where numerous acts of cruelty go unpunished. For activists and citizens, Ron has become a symbol of resilience and the urgent need for strict law enforcement.
