Jeovanis Rodríguez Mustelier was apprehended in Torriente, a locality within Jagüey Grande, Matanzas, following the fatal stabbing of his ex-partner in a case of gender-based violence. On Tuesday, the pro-government platform "Con Todos La Victoria" shared on Facebook that the attack was driven by jealousy and resulted in multiple deadly injuries to the victim.

After Rodríguez Mustelier's arrest, authorities seized the weapon used in the attack, and he is now facing legal proceedings. With a lengthy criminal record, Rodríguez Mustelier has previous convictions for violent robbery, rape, disobedience, and assault. In a prior incident this June, the same pro-government source reported on Facebook that he was found in Torriente with tools often used for criminal activity, including steel cables, ropes, a file, and a machete. This earlier detention prevented a potential livestock attack but failed to stop him from later committing a more serious crime.

While the official source did not disclose the victim's identity, independent feminist groups have confirmed her as Yarisleidis Reyes Alfonso. Her murder has been added to the latest record of violent deaths of women in Cuba, maintained by civil society organizations. This incident adds to the alarming rise in documented femicides across the nation. On September 30 alone, two such cases were reported in different provinces, including the one in Torriente.

Rising Concerns Over Gender Violence in Cuba

Activists caution that, given the lack of official statistics and the absence of femicide as a distinct crime in the Penal Code, civil society has had to take the lead in highlighting the scale of the issue. The repeated slogan of "zero tolerance" used by the official platform starkly contrasts with the reality of a judicial and policing system that fails to prevent gender violence or establish effective protective measures for women at risk.

The death of Yarisleidis Reyes Alfonso underscores the vulnerability faced by countless Cuban women amid a growing, unacknowledged crisis. This recent arrest comes shortly after another incident in Matanzas, where Williams Fundora Aldazabal was identified as the alleged perpetrator of a brutal attack on his ex-partner in the Este area.
