The arrival of the V2V Empress, a catamaran capable of carrying 240 passengers, has been confirmed by Cuba's Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila. The vessel will begin service on September 29, connecting Isla de la Juventud, Surgidero de Batabanó, and Cayo Largo del Sur. This new addition will temporarily replace the aging ferry, Perseverancia, which is slated for extensive maintenance after decades of operation. Its final sailings are scheduled for October 1 and 3 before it undergoes repairs, as stated by Rodríguez on social media.

Passengers will be able to purchase tickets for the V2V Empress up to 15 days in advance for a price of 200 CUP. The catamaran's schedule will alternate between routes to Batabanó and Cayo Largo, with one day each week dedicated to maintenance. Additionally, authorities have planned to review luggage and terminal regulations to ensure a safe and organized service.

Anticipated Launch of Río Las Casas Catamaran

In a related development, the launch of the catamaran Río Las Casas is expected soon, though specific details remain undisclosed. The transportation network of Isla de la Juventud has long suffered from its fragile state, exacerbated by frequent suspensions of the Perseverancia ferry, which has been the sole operational vessel linking the special municipality with Surgidero de Batabanó in Mayabeque.

Back in August 2024, officials from the Maritime-Port Business Group (Gemar) explained that the catamarans Río Júcaro and Río Las Casas, both in service for over 20 years, were out of operation due to severe deterioration and a scarcity of necessary parts for maintenance. This ongoing issue has led to widespread frustration among the residents of the special municipality, who feel increasingly isolated due to their reliance on this critical mode of transport.

Maritime transportation is vital for ensuring the supply of goods and services, as well as the movement of passengers. The situation underscores the need for reliable and efficient transport solutions to serve the community adequately.
