The United States' National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced on Saturday that a vigorous tropical disturbance in the eastern Caribbean has intensified into Tropical Depression Nine. This system is already causing heavy rains in Cuba and may escalate into a tropical storm, or potentially a hurricane, in the coming days.

According to the 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time advisory, the depression boasts maximum sustained winds of 34 mph (55 km/h) and is moving northwest at roughly 8 mph (13 km/h). The NHC has warned that the system will continue to strengthen, bringing tropical storm conditions to parts of central and northwestern Bahamas through Sunday night.

Rainfall Threats and Potential Flooding

Countries such as Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic will experience persistent rain over the weekend. These conditions pose a significant risk of flash and urban flooding, as well as landslides in mountainous regions.

Moreover, the agency has issued a cautionary note about the severe rainfall potential along the eastern United States' coastline early next week. Areas including Georgia, the Carolinas, and the Mid-Atlantic could face river flooding due to heavy downpours.

Weather Impact on Cuba

Although the depression's center is veering toward the Atlantic, eastern Cuban provinces are being severely impacted by its rain bands. The country's Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) has issued a Special Advisory for intense rainfall in Camagüey, Holguín, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo. Rainfall accumulations may exceed 8 inches (200 mm), with some areas in Guantánamo potentially receiving up to 16 inches (400 mm), according to experts.

The Civil Defense has voiced concerns over the saturated soil conditions following months of drought, urging heightened caution in communities susceptible to flooding and landslides. Residents in Bayamo, Contramaestre, and Guantánamo have reported heavy rains and persistent thunderstorms since early morning, prompting local authorities to activate protective measures for the populace.

Potential Threat to Florida

The projected path of this system should be closely monitored by Miami and other Florida cities, as it may evolve into a hurricane as it nears the southeastern United States next week. Meteorological authorities advise staying informed at all times and preparing emergency plans.
