The lifeless body of Daily Acosta, a young mother who had been missing for two days from La Güinera, was discovered near Parque Lenin on Friday. This tragic news was confirmed by independent media outlets and family acquaintances.

In the days leading up to this discovery, neighbors, family, and friends rallied both online and in the streets in a concerted effort to locate her. Among the many messages shared, a poignant one came from her partner, Lázaro Ambert, who posted on Facebook: "Where are you, my love? I miss you... come back, I'm here as always to support you... remember we're a team. I won't stop searching even if I go crazy in the process, it's worth it to me... I love you, please come back, my sunshine."

The outcome of this search has left the Havana neighborhood of Arroyo Naranjo in shock, where the community had shown immense solidarity in supporting the family. The anguish now turns to demands for justice and clarity on the circumstances surrounding Daily's death, leaving behind two young daughters.

As of the latest reports, there are no new details shedding light on the circumstances of her disappearance or her tragic end. This incident has reignited public concern over the lack of official data on femicides in Cuba.

Independent organizations like the Observatorio de Género de Alas Tensas (OGAT) and Yo Sí Te Creo en Cuba have documented over 270 women murders since 2019. In 2024 alone, there were 55 reported cases, with more than 30 so far in 2025.

Despite the increasing number of cases, Cuba lacks a legal definition for femicide and does not have effective public protocols for locating missing women. Activists also highlight the criminalization of feminist activism and the lack of access to official information, which forces communities to organize independently in the face of such tragedies.

Addressing the Femicide Crisis in Cuba

What is the current situation regarding femicides in Cuba?

Cuba is experiencing a significant issue with femicides, with independent organizations reporting over 270 cases since 2019. However, there is no official recognition or legal framework addressing this crisis.

How are communities responding to the lack of official action?

Communities are taking initiative by organizing themselves to support affected families and raise awareness, due to the absence of effective public protocols and the criminalization of feminist activism.
