Former Judge Melody González Deported Back to Cuba

Friday, September 26, 2025 by Richard Morales

The former Cuban judge, Melody González Pedraza, has returned to Cuba following her deportation by the United States on Thursday. After spending 484 days in various Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers, her controversial case has concluded. Her deportation reignites discussions about the accountability of regime officials who attempt to start anew in exile.

Journalist Mario J. Pentón from Martí Noticias confirmed her departure on Thursday, sharing archive images of González. Her arrival in the United States in May 2024 had sparked backlash within the Cuban exile community. Initially entering Tampa under the humanitarian parole program, her entry was immediately denied due to her oppressive past. Her name appeared on the list of repressors by the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba. Despite seeking political asylum, her request was rejected by U.S. authorities.

Controversial Judicial History

Before leaving Cuba, González had issued harsh sentences of three and four years to four young individuals accused of throwing Molotov cocktails. The trial was heavily criticized for lacking evidence and relying on confessions obtained under duress, as well as testimonies from State Security.

Reactions from Victims’ Families

The news of her deportation brought relief to many in Cuba. One of the mothers of the sentenced youths expressed her satisfaction to Martí Noticias, stating, "I received very good news, very satisfied, very happy because I was informed that former judge Melody González has been deported here, to Cuba. Great work by everyone involved, many blessings and many thanks."

This case has reignited debates regarding the moral and political responsibilities of former regime officials seeking refuge in the United States. Lawyer Santiago Alpízar from the organization Cuba Demanda emphasized in an interview with Pentón that González should not be considered a victim: “She is not a victim. Nothing will happen to her upon her return to Cuba; she might even receive a medal.”

Uncertain Future in Cuba

Upon her return to Cuba, the future of Melody González remains unclear. She could potentially face charges due to her prior statements against the judicial system or, conversely, receive protection from the very regime she served as a Communist Party member and head of a municipal court.
