On Saturday, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz declared that "the full force of revolutionary justice" would be applied to the alleged perpetrator responsible for the murder of Captain Leonel Mesa Rodríguez of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR). The incident took place early Friday on a stretch of road between Remedios and Caibarién in Villa Clara. "MININT forces, with the support of the people, have apprehended the murderer... Acts of this nature will never be tolerated, and the criminal will face the full weight of revolutionary justice," Marrero stated on the social media platform X.

The national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), former spy Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, echoed this sentiment, asserting that the crime "will not go unpunished."

Discovery of the Body and Initial Reports

Captain Mesa, aged 62, was found dead in the La Reforma district next to his official motorcycle. According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), he suffered six stab wounds and a gunshot to the head, supporting the theory of a direct assault on the officer. Hours before the official announcement, locals and independent media reported the discovery in an area known as La Cabaña. Witnesses described the body as having a bullet wound to the forehead and multiple stab wounds, with his service weapon missing.

On the same day, MININT announced the arrest of the suspected killer in the city of Remedios. The suspect was found with Mesa's service pistol, its magazine, and the knife used in the attack. The identity of the detainee has not been disclosed. The institution stated that the case will proceed through the legal system "with the rigor demanded by revolutionary justice, reflecting the magnitude and severity of the crime."

Funeral and Public Reactions

The officer was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown of Taguasco, Sancti Spíritus, during a ceremony with military honors. Attendees included family, locals, and high-ranking MININT officials, such as Minister Lázaro Alberto Álvarez Casas. Also present were the first secretaries of the Communist Party in Villa Clara and Sancti Spíritus, Suseli Morfa González and Delvy Pérez Martín. Raúl Castro and President Miguel Díaz-Canel sent floral tributes.

In the wake of the murder, MININT organized revolutionary reaffirmation events in several provinces, reiterating the official stance that such acts will be met with "the firm response of revolutionary laws and the unanimous condemnation of the people."
