The Cuban Customs Authority uncovered an attempt to smuggle over $23,000 in foreign currency out of the country at Havana’s José Martí International Airport on Friday. Vice Chief of Customs, Wiliam Pérez González, revealed that part of the money was cleverly concealed within a packet of wet wipes, as well as in a double-bottomed backpack and the traveler's belt.

Pérez González explained the concealment techniques that were employed and highlighted that the discovery was made during the outbound control process at the Havana airport terminal. This successful interception was credited to the expertise of a young radiologist at the airport, whose keen observation led to the detection of anomalies during the inspection process.

In Cuba, travelers are required by law to declare cash amounts exceeding $5,000 when entering or leaving the country. According to statements from Customs, authorities remain vigilant, enforcing stringent measures at airport terminals to combat illegal activities and safeguard the nation’s resources. This involves identifying undeclared goods and working closely with the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) to handle smuggling incidents.

In a recent operation, Customs thwarted a smuggling attempt involving over 4,500 counterfeit cigars at Havana’s international airport. The cigars, packed in boxes bearing the names of well-known brands, were found with two passengers who intended to export them illegally.
