Tobacco farmers in Villa Clara have taken the initiative to finance the comprehensive renovation of several wards at the José Luis Miranda Pediatric Hospital. This effort is being praised for its humanitarian and social impact in the region. The investment covered essential upgrades such as replacing medical equipment, lighting, air conditioning systems, and bathroom improvements, according to Antonio Subí Pérez, director of La Estrella Tobacco Collection and Benefit Company.

In an interview with the state-run newspaper Vanguardia, Subí Pérez expressed the pride felt by the tobacco community in contributing to the well-being of social institutions like this hospital, which provides medical care to children. Producer Orelvis Peñate emphasized the personal satisfaction derived from contributing to a safer and more welcoming environment for pediatric patients, their families, and healthcare staff.

Oscar Armando Fernández Alegret, the hospital's director, expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting the significance of waterproofing the roofs, particularly those of the surgical theaters. He also noted that the farmers donated kitchen equipment, air conditioning units, and other resources that enhance the overall conditions of the healthcare facility.

Founded on June 25, 1960, the José Luis Miranda Hospital is equipped with 321 beds and offers a full range of pediatric services. It serves as a reference center for specialties such as Oncohematology, Nephrology-Hemodialysis, Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Cystic Fibrosis.

While the community has warmly received this initiative, it has also sparked criticism of the Cuban regime for its insufficient state investment in hospital infrastructure maintenance and modernization. This shortfall forces reliance on donations from agricultural producers to meet basic healthcare needs. For decades, the government has touted public health as a major social achievement, yet the deteriorating conditions of many hospitals and medical centers reveal a decline due to resource shortages, outdated technology, and the exodus of healthcare professionals.
