Thursday, September 18, 2025 by Samantha Mendoza

A young Cuban woman took to TikTok to share her experience of dining with her mother at Café Fortuna Joe, a well-known private restaurant in Havana. The final bill came to a staggering 8,000 Cuban pesos, roughly equivalent to $19 at the informal exchange rate. "I want to clarify that not everyone can afford to visit a 'paladar'. I wish everyone could, but only those who are entrepreneurs or run their own businesses can indulge in this luxury from time to time," wrote the user @danielamamacubana in the video's caption.

The young woman wanted to treat her mother to a special afternoon at this establishment, famous for its vintage decor and unique furnishings, which include tables set inside classic cars, bathtubs, and other items that create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. "You can only experience this here, admire this enchanting decor, mom. Every table has its own unique and different style," she narrated.

The menu featured a special michelada made with mango, tamarind, and hibiscus for her mother, while the video creator opted for an alternative cocktail since the power went out and they couldn't prepare her piña colada. As for the meals, they enjoyed tostones with ham and cheese, along with main courses of pork stuffed with ham and cheese and sautéed chicken fajitas, accompanied by sides of rice, yucca, beans, and tostones.

Despite feeling "stuffed," as she commented, they ended their meal with dessert. The total bill was 8,000 CUP, a figure she deemed "reasonable" when compared to other private eateries. "Considering the quality and quantity, I thought it was fair," she remarked in the video.

Private restaurants, or paladares, in Cuba emerged in the 1990s following the partial opening to self-employment. They have become go-to spots for tourists and a small segment of Cubans with higher income. However, the prices in Cuban pesos are typically beyond the reach of the majority who rely on government salaries.

Understanding the Impact of Dining Costs in Cuba

Why are private restaurant prices in Cuba beyond the reach of many?

Private restaurant prices are often high due to the limited availability of resources and the expenses involved in maintaining such establishments. Additionally, most Cubans rely on government salaries, which are insufficient to cover these luxury expenses.

What makes Café Fortuna Joe unique among Havana's restaurants?

Café Fortuna Joe is known for its vintage decor and distinctive furniture, offering a unique dining experience with tables set in classic cars and bathtubs, creating an appealing and memorable atmosphere.
