Cuban Accused of Fatally Shooting Florida Officer at Gas Station: Fired 24 Rounds

In Volusia County, Florida, a young Cuban man named Eduardo Labrada Machado, 24, has been apprehended for the fatal shooting of Officer David Jewell from Edgewater. The tragic incident occurred at a Circle K gas station, where Jewell had stopped. According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, Labrada, who worked at the station, fired 24 shots at the officer on Monday afternoon around 4:08 p.m. The shooting took place at the service station located at Ocean Shore Boulevard and Wisteria Drive, as reported by Telemundo 31.

The firearm used in the attack was discovered later inside Labrada's vehicle. Sheriff Mike Chitwood confirmed that surveillance footage captured the close-range assault. "The video is something that, in my 38 years of law enforcement, I can assure you is unbelievable," he stated during a press conference.

The investigation revealed that the suspect confessed to the crime, admitting he had "a bad day" and had previously contemplated shooting Jewell, whom he knew by sight from previous encounters at the gas station. Labrada mentioned past arguments with the officer but did not provide further details.

Family members of the accused informed authorities that Labrada had been diagnosed with a mental health disorder and claimed to hear voices, although he had not previously exhibited homicidal behavior. Currently, the suspect is held without bail in the Volusia County Jail, facing first-degree murder charges. Meanwhile, the law enforcement community and Officer Jewell's family are receiving psychological support following the tragedy.
