The renowned Cuban school of triple jump has once again demonstrated its prowess on the global athletics stage. Out of six athletes trained in Cuba but competing under various flags at the 2025 World Championship in Tokyo, three have advanced to the finals, keeping their medal hopes alive.

According to journalist Raúl Rodríguez on Facebook, Olympic champion Pedro Pablo Pichardo, representing Portugal, alongside Andy Díaz for Italy and Lázaro Martínez for Cuba, have earned their spots in the final. Their achievements continue to uphold the rich tradition of Cuban triple jump excellence.

Athletes Who Missed the Cut

Unfortunately, not all could make it through. Current Olympic titleholder Jordan Díaz, competing for Spain, has faced a challenging season plagued with injuries and did not advance. Andy Hechevarría and Cristian Nápoles also fell short during the preliminary rounds.

Reflections on Paris 2024

Less than a year ago, in the Paris 2024 Olympics, Díaz, Pichardo, and Andy Díaz claimed gold, silver, and bronze medals respectively for Spain, Portugal, and Italy in the triple jump final. Paradoxically, Cuban representative Martínez finished without a medal.

In that thrilling competition, 23-year-old Jordan Díaz dethroned reigning Olympic champion Pichardo with a leap of 17.86 meters, surpassing Pichardo's 17.84 meters. Andy Díaz secured the bronze with a 17.64-meter jump, while Martínez placed eighth with a jump of 17.34 meters.

A School of Global Influence

Despite the different national allegiances, these results underscore the enduring influence and quality of the Cuban triple jump school. It continues to produce world-class talent and remains a benchmark in one of the most technically demanding athletics events.
