The renowned Cuban comedian Ulises Toirac addressed the backlash he received on social media for obtaining free medical treatment at a hospital in Havana. On Wednesday, Toirac assured his followers that, contrary to some critics' hopes, his care was both appropriate and beneficial for his health. "Today I was once again treated for free at the Pando Ferrer hospital. Contrary to what some may wish, they didn't pour acid in my eye; instead, they conducted a thorough analysis of the results from my first injection," Toirac shared on his profile, responding to those who question his use of the public healthcare system.

The medical team observed an improvement in the macula of his eye, as they successfully drained fluid from the area. It is anticipated that future injections will lead to further progress. Toirac expressed gratitude to those genuinely concerned about his health, and humorously addressed the controversy with his trademark wit: "I'm heading to the market to pick up my groceries. I 'don't live here,' but I do live here."

Through these remarks, Toirac not only provided an update on his medical treatment but also sent a clear message to those who criticize his personal choices, reaffirming his connection to daily life in Cuba. A follower on Facebook commented, "I'm so glad you're getting better. Let the haters hate themselves and their accomplices. You are one of us, and God blesses those who are ours. I embrace you."

However, some comments persisted in arguing that the medical care he received was not truly free but rather public, as the supposed gratuity is offset by the population's low standard of living. The comedian's vision-related illness has been exploited by the regime to discredit him through fake profiles and supporters of the dictatorship.

Many comments pointed out the perceived hypocrisy of Toirac for criticizing the Cuban system while also seeking treatment in its hospitals. Nevertheless, the artist has little choice, as he resides on the island. The prominent comedian had previously informed that he would need to undergo an additional medical procedure to halt the progression of macular degeneration, which is seriously affecting his vision.

The treatment involves an intravitreal injection directly into the retina, aimed at preventing the macula's deformation caused by the abnormal growth of tiny blood vessels. Toirac's case has become a public testament to the harsh reality of macular degeneration, a disease diagnosed in 2023 that initially only impacted his left eye.

However, by the end of August, he revealed that the degenerative process had begun affecting his right eye, increasingly compromising his vision.
