When discussing the greats of Cuban athletics, Yipsi Moreno invariably stands out as an elite figure. We spotlight her today due to her recent participation in the women's hammer throw at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, where she competed on behalf of Albania.

Beyond her throw of 65.38 meters, there's a story, a life, a legend. What was it like for the "Fury of Agramonte" to compete in this World Championship?

"It was a unique and extraordinary experience... a complete adventure! It was wonderful to share the field again with the Polish hammer thrower Anita Włodarczyk, the greatest of all time—four-time world champion, triple Olympic champion, and world record holder at 82.98 meters—who continues to shine at 40. Competing alongside Romanian Bianca Ghelber and younger athletes who were my rivals before I retired was amazing. Being among the new generation, coached by many who were part of my era, is lovely."

Unexpected Opportunities and New Beginnings

Did you ever imagine returning to the hammer cage, especially at a World Championship?

"Oh, no! It was a beautiful, albeit strange, experience because this opportunity came after I'd thought I would never throw again. I arrived in Albania, and here I am."

Why Albania?

"My husband Abdel has a job contract that allows our entire family to be together. In Tirana, they asked if I would be interested in throwing again, even just for the Nationals, and based on my performance, I could participate in competitions like the Balkan Games in the third division, among others. Abdel encouraged me, knowing how much I love this sport and have stayed active in the gym. So, we decided to try it as a hobby, and here we are."

The Challenge of Competing Once More

Returning to the Tokyo World Championships, you seemed poised to surpass the 68.74 meters you recently achieved for Albania, perhaps even dreaming of 70 meters. Were you disappointed?

"Oh, dear! You don't miss a thing. Yes, I was in great shape, but I didn't succeed. It was, in terms of results, the worst competition I've had, even though I was well-prepared. I might have felt like I did at my first World Championship in Seville '99. But in sports, being physically ready isn't enough. Everything needs to align on the day, and maybe I was too anxious. But I'm not discouraged; instead, I'm awakening the remaining Yipsi within the sports realm and applying it to my life."

Reflections on Leadership and Legacy

Did leading the National Athletics Commission affect your personal life?

"I could say it did because I was, and still am with those who respect me, quite naive and respectful. Some tried to take advantage of that, but they hit a wall. I learned a lot from that experience, though. I wasn't dismissed; I requested my departure before the Obregón World Championships. Directing during the pandemic without a track taught me resilience. Although we didn't win gold medals, we achieved some excellent results."

A Look Back and Forward

At 44, as you look back, what brings you the most pride: your Olympic title or your three world championships?

"All my medals are my pride because each one carries a story of sacrifice, not only mine but also my family's, my husband Abdel's, and my coach's. My personal record (76.62 meters) brought immense satisfaction. I cherish all my achievements; they were all earned with love!"

Will you continue to be active in sports?

"When I return to Albania, I'll take a short vacation, then prepare for the next season. I'll give it my all for two more years. I've made significant progress in just one year, so let's see what two years can bring."
