Ángel Santiesteban-Prats Arrested in Havana Amid Nationwide Blackout

Thursday, September 11, 2025 by Emma Garcia

Cuban writer and dissident Ángel Santiesteban-Prats was arrested in Havana on Wednesday as he attempted to leave his home during a widespread blackout that affected the entire island. His partner, journalist and activist Camila Acosta, reported that State Security agents prevented him from moving freely, detaining him without any official explanation for three hours.

"A G2 officer told him he couldn't leave until the power was restored. Ángel responded by saying they might as well arrest him," Acosta recounted, emphasizing that Santiesteban insisted his home was not a prison cell.

The arrest occurred amidst heightened social tensions due to an energy crisis that left Cuba without electricity after the collapse of the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant. The blackout, which halted essential services, sparked spontaneous protests across various neighborhoods, providing a backdrop for the harassment of regime critics.

Santiesteban-Prats, a well-known author, dissident, and Masonic leader, has been a vocal opponent of cultural and political repression in Cuba. He has previously been imprisoned on politically motivated charges, though the government attempted to portray his case as one of "common crimes." His situation adds to the growing list of artists and writers targeted by the regime.

"Ángel left without his phone. It's likely they'll keep him locked up for three to five days, until they manage – if they manage this time – to synchronize the power plants and restore electricity," stated the journalist.

A video released by the independent outlet CubaNet captures the moment the dissident gets into the police car, which then speeds away. The arrest coincides with increased control measures over the population during the blackout. Other dissidents, such as Yamilka Lafita, are also under police surveillance.

As the regime issued warnings through the Electric Union about alleged "fake news" on social media — including parody posts encouraging people to take to the streets as in Nepal — political police intensified their monitoring of dissidents and independent journalists.

This incident highlights that, even amidst a national blackout, the regime's priority is not addressing the energy crisis, but rather silencing any critical voices. The repression of Santiesteban-Prats sends a clear message: in Cuba, freedom of movement and expression remain subject to the regime's absolute control.
