A 45-year-old Cuban woman residing in Miami has been apprehended and charged with orchestrating a systematic theft operation at the jewelry store where she was employed. She allegedly seized high-value items and later pawned them at various shops. Nubia Milena Torres-Cubillos, who worked at Miami Gold Pawn Inc. located on Northwest 7th Street, was caught by surveillance cameras discreetly removing links from a Cuban-style gold bracelet valued at $104,500.
The incidents took place between June and August. Surveillance footage captured how Torres-Cubillos hid the links in a strategically placed box on a shelf, maneuvering it to limit visibility, and at times, concealing them in paper to transport them to her desk or directly into her pockets. Investigators noted in one scene that she "walked unnaturally" to prevent the gold from jingling.
The police report, accessed by Local 10, further highlights that on July 3, she pretended to organize merchandise to relocate the box containing the stolen fragments. She later took advantage of a work break to enter a colleague's office and place the pilfered links in her bag.
The investigation uncovered that some of the stolen items were quickly converted to cash: one link was pawned for $3,500 on June 28, and another for $1,800 on July 5. But this wasn’t the extent of her activities. Detectives found that Torres-Cubillos also removed other valuable items from the jewelry store, such as 18-karat gold bracelets and necklaces, some adorned with gemstones, which were pawned on various dates for amounts ranging from $250 to $755.
Given the gravity of the findings, she faces charges of grand theft, organized fraud, dealing in stolen property, and selling items without verifying ownership. She was arrested on Tuesday and, upon her arrest, exercised her right to remain silent and requested an attorney. Torres-Cubillos is currently held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bail set at $40,000.
