A man from Orlando, with a criminal record spanning over twenty years as a sexual predator, has been apprehended in Boynton Beach located in Palm Beach County. He traveled there with the intention of meeting a 14-year-old. His arrest was part of an undercover operation orchestrated by the local Police Department.

Undercover Operation and Contact via Grindr

Authorities disclosed that on August 26, Phillip J. Smith, aged 49, initiated contact through the dating app Grindr. He believed he was communicating with a teenager, but in reality, it was a profile managed by an undercover detective. Their conversations soon transitioned to text messages and phone calls, where Smith graphically described his intentions towards the supposed teenager. At one point, he agreed to make the approximately 118-mile journey to fulfill the meeting.

"The discussions were extremely explicit, leaving no room for interpretation other than sexual activity," revealed John Bonafair, the deputy chief of the Boynton Beach Police Department, to Telemundo 51.

Arrest and Confession

Last Saturday, around 4:00 pm, Smith checked into a hotel near what he thought was the child's residence. Law enforcement officers intercepted him in the hotel parking lot. Upon being confronted with a weapon, Smith raised his hands, knelt, and surrendered without resistance. Once in custody, he admitted to investigators that he had traveled specifically to meet a minor.

Lengthy Criminal Record

Court records indicate that Smith is a repeat sexual offender listed in the state system. He was previously convicted of raping a seven-year-old girl and multiple sexual assaults on another five-year-old, in addition to grand theft charges. He served 21 years in prison for these crimes and was released in 2023 under probation, which he violated by engaging in this new incident.

Smith is currently facing new charges, including traveling to meet a minor, transmitting harmful material to minors, misuse of a communication device, and soliciting a minor to engage in sexual conduct. He remains detained in the Palm Beach County Jail without the possibility of bail.

Authorities on High Alert

The deputy chief of police described the detainee as "a sick individual actively seeking a minor." Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing, and they do not rule out the possibility of more victims. This arrest is part of the local police's efforts to enhance surveillance on digital platforms to safeguard the most vulnerable members of society.
