A bus driver in Havana reported being the victim of theft while on duty, a distressing incident amidst the already dire public transportation situation and rising criminal activity in the capital. The driver, Yandy Rodríguez, shared his experience in the Facebook group Transportación Habana TH, describing how a thief stole his rubber boots and a set of tools.

"Then they get upset when we drive empty on the roads. May God bless them and soon make the thief pay. We try to help the community since public transport is poor, and they repay us by stealing. Blessings," the driver lamented.

This complaint highlights the insecurity and difficult conditions faced by many public transport workers in Cuba, who must contend not only with shortages of parts and fuel but also with incidents like this, which exacerbate the sector's vulnerability and directly impact service to the public.

Theft and More Theft

On August 30, it was reported that a cell phone was stolen on a public bus in Havana, prompting the driver to take the bus to the police. Theft on Havana buses is rampant, with pickpockets operating with impunity. Passengers, urged to safeguard their belongings, often complain about the inaction of both drivers and the police.

Another alarming incident of insecurity in interprovincial transportation happened when a group of thieves stole bags from a bus belonging to the state-run company Transtur, during a trip from Oriente to Havana. This event occurred on Saturday, August 16, around 10:30 PM on the busy Vía Blanca, when the vehicle briefly stopped at a traffic light.

During those few moments, several individuals opened the luggage compartment, seized multiple bags, and fled, leaving passengers shocked and shouting.
