Cuban Customs thwarted an attempt to smuggle more than 4,400 loose cigars with bands out of the country, bypassing declaration at Havana's international airport. Wiliam Pérez González, the first deputy chief of the General Customs of the Republic, announced on social media platform X that the agents discovered the cigars during an attempt to circumvent customs control. However, he did not specify the number of individuals involved in the smuggling operation.

The official also did not confirm if the cigars were authentic, though it's likely they were counterfeits, which still fetch a good price outside of Cuba. He explained that the illegal trade of cigars generates significant profits in the black market, prompting a formal report to the Revolutionary National Police (PNR).

Enhanced Security Measures at Airports

Authorities emphasized that they are actively maintaining control measures at airport terminals to combat illegal operations and safeguard the country's resources. In 2022, Miami customs reported an increase in travelers from Cuba who, within just three weeks, reported the confiscation of alcohol and tobacco purchased on the island.

A year later, U.S. authorities reiterated that Cuban-produced alcohol and tobacco products were not allowed in luggage entering the country and would be seized under the regulations in effect at the time.

Recent Drug Smuggling Attempts

In recent days, Cuban customs have reported several attempts to smuggle drugs into the country using various concealment methods. One incident involved cocaine hidden in packages of wet wipes, described as a new tactic by drug traffickers. Another attempt involved concealing cocaine within tuna cans and the structure of a suitcase.
